Shaft Seals
Q: Is you pump leaking water out the back of the housing?
A: If so it's likely that your pump seal is the cause. One can typically identify a shaft seal leak by visually inspecting where the motor shaft enters the pump housing. There will be evidence of mineral build up or water dripping when the pump is in operation.
Your shaft seal is multi-piece seal which prevents water from leaking out of the pump but still allowing the motor shaft & impeller to spin freely. Shaft seals are parts which will wear out but can easily be replaced by most people who are fairly handy.
Where are the shaft seals located?
Spa Shaft Seals: In spa pumps the seal can be reached by removing the pump from the spa and disassembling the wet end (plastic pump casing).
TIP # to remove the impeller you will need a flat screw driver - on the back of the motor possibly under the cover you will find the rear of the motor shaft which will have a slot. You can use the screw driver in this slot to stop the shaft from spinning.
US Seal Mfg has a great video with instructions on how to do a seal swap. Click Here The seal lubricant they refer to is the same as our Lube Tube PFTE
Pool Shaft Seals: The shaft seal can be more difficult to reach in pool pumps with large strainer basket assemblies.

While nothing can replace constant close adult supervision you can take measures to help protect the little ones, children and pets. If
you own a pool, pond or spa it’s up to you to keep children and pets
from falling into the water, 24-hours a day, every day of the year – as you may know a child can drown in less time than it takes to answer the
phone. 67% of all drownings occur in backyard spas, pools and bathtubs. Even worse for every child who drowns, four children are hospitalized for near-drowning. The majority of drowning incidents have occurred while the child's supervisor assumed the child was safely indoors.
These
statistics on drowning accidents involving children and young people
are alarming, but these accidents are also preventable. Prevention
and peace of mind are what The Katchakid ® from Katchakid Inc. is
all about. With a 100 percent safety record, it is one of the most
secure, proven safety systems available today.
How is a pool net better than a solid cover?
Katchakid & ProtectaPond DIY net kits are sold in
standard shapes: squares and rectangles. No two installations are
alike. Each kit comes standard with flush mount Nylon Anchors but other anchor styles are available. As we're the online retailer of these DIY net kits we recommend contacting us first to discuss your options prior to any purchase. Visit our eCommerce store www.spapartsshop.com or our informational website www.watchdogpoolsafety.com
Through our own research and parental feed back we have found that:
- Solid swimming pool covers attract small children, they use it like a trampoline, even riding their bikes over it and parental feedback indicates that children have to be constantly removed from the center of pool covers.
- An aging pool cover can become brittle posing an additional drowning risk of a breaking under a child's weight.
- Solid covers can be become slippery when wet preventing a child from being able to get back off the water.
- Solid pool covers can sag and hold puddles of rainwater - as a child can drown in just 5cm - 8cm of water this is also a far from ideal situation.
- Solid pool covers obscure top to bottom visibility of the swimming pool so one cannot see what is underneath the cover.
How is a pool net better than a pool alarm?
Pool safety reasoning is keeping
children out of the water. A child already in the water activates the
swimming pool alarm. It can take 3 - 5 minutes for irreversible brain
damage to occur and from as little as 30 seconds for death. We reccomend
a pool alarm and a safety net, layers of prevention is best.
How is a pool net better than a pool fence?
The study suggests that if the
proportion were increased by 100% most drownings of children under the
age of 5 years would still not have been prevented. The study made the
recommendation that additional strategies to prevent drowning other than
pool fencing were needed. We recommend a pool fence and a safety net,
layers of prevention is best.
